Qingyuan Polytechnic Starts Cloud Education
Qingyuan Polytechnic constructed its cloud education platform using HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop solution, which also improved O&M efficiency and resource utilization.
Background
Qingyuan Polytechnic is a wide-ranging public college founded in 2002, authorized by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, registered with the Ministry of Education, and sponsored by the People’s Government of Qingyuan. The new campus of Qingyuan Polytechnic covers an area of 256,400 square meters. Qingyuan Polytechnic has widespread teaching and assisted-teaching facilities, including a provincial-level training base. The college has more than 600 teaching staff and about 17,000 students, including full-time regular secondary school students, vocational school students, and adult education students. For its key majors, Qingyuan Polytechnic has established a school-enterprise cooperation mechanism based on mutual benefits. By deepening school-enterprise cooperation and integrating work and study, the college has achieved significant success in co-establishing a training base, constructing teaching teams with dual professional degrees, optimizing the training of professional talents, reforming the curriculum, improving “dual-certificate” education, developing “order-oriented” training, and promoting graduate employment.
Challenges
Qingyuan Polytechnic has many multimedia classrooms. The four year old PCs were outdated and could not meet users’ requirements. The high failure rate of PCs affected the normal teaching proceedings. Out of order PCs were piled up in the equipment room and were wasted. Students were able to operate PCs, modify system information, and install software randomly causing failure and security concerns, while diminishing user experience.
Qingyuan Polytechnic planned to establish digital reading rooms for students to query, borrow, and browse eBooks. These digital reading rooms needed to be secure, provide simple management, offer quality user experience, and easy O&M.
Solution
In 2012, Qingyuan Polytechnic learned about HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop Solution, and considered it as a feasible solution to resolve its information infrastructure problems. After collecting the requirements from its teachers and information center staff, organized a complete Proof-of-Concept (PoC) test to verify whether HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop Solution could meet the requirements of the college. Based on a complete test and the experience from teachers teaching different courses — using the HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop — the college was able to expand its user base from 300 to 850 people. In early 2013, project delivery started. The launch of the first group of English classrooms was completed before the beginning of the new term.
In June of 2013, 180 VMs with Windows XP + Internet Explorer 6 (the online examination system of the Ministry of Education was based on Internet Explorer 6) were provisioned in one day to meet the requirements of National English Level Test. The quick provisioning of desktop ensured the success of the test.
  • Huawei products are used as the major hardware and software components of the desktop cloud system. Major hardware includes two Huawei E6000 servers and two Huawei S5500T storage devices. Major software includes cloud platform software FusionSphere, desktop cloud management software FusionAccess, and cloud platform management software FusionManager.
  • The O&M platform of HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop Solution enables the unified and centralized management of physical resources (servers, storage devices, and network devices), virtual resources (VMs), and desktop systems. With a visualized system creating status reports, detailed resource usage reports, centralized maintenance of VMs, and alarm logs of the system, HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop Solution enables centralized and efficient management of the system and desktop services. Compared to the O&M service for office-scattered PCs, HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop Solution reduced O&M workload and improved efficiency by more than ten times.
  • By using PVS (the provisioning system) and linked-clone technology, HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop Solution enabled unified management and upgrade of image templates, quick desktop provisioning in batches, and unified upgrade of patches and software.
Benefits
  • Lowered TCO & OPEX: The resource utilization rate has risen from 10% to above 60%, and capital investment has been reduced. Compared to the average power consumption of more than 200W for a PC (usually with 350W advanced power configured), the power consumption of a VM is 60W, thereby reducing power consumption by 70% and the lifecycle OPEX costs.
  • Simplified IT management: The unified O&M platform provides quick service provisioning and centralized management of office system software. Compared to traditional office systems on PCs, HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop Solution improves O&M efficiency by more than ten times.
  • Cloud teaching platform construction: A new cloud teaching platform was constructed using HUAWEI CLOUD Stack Desktop Solution creating a solid education cloud to further advanced teaching methods.
